The practice case

Each person visited one place and carried one object. Each place and object belongs to one person. Use the clues to work out those pairs.

At a small cinema office near the harbour, the studio ledger disappeared after the late show. Three people stayed behind: Mira Dsouza, Rafiq Merchant, and Tara Sen. The places in the record are Apollo Bunder, Grant Road Cinema, and Ballard Pier. The implements are a brass key, a fountain pen, and a folding umbrella. The caretaker checked the cupboard: only the brass key could open it. For this practice case, the person carrying that key took the ledger. Find that person and their location.

Three lines make the case workable

Mira signed the visitors book at Apollo Bunder.

Rafiq was away from Ballard Pier, and Tara was away from Apollo Bunder.

The fountain pen was at Ballard Pier; the folding umbrella was at Grant Road Cinema.

The board follows the article

Mira’s signature confirms Apollo Bunder and clears her from the other two places. Rafiq is cleared from Ballard Pier, and Tara from Apollo Bunder; with Apollo already taken, Rafiq settles at Grant Road Cinema and Tara at Ballard Pier.

The implement line then carries across the solved places: Tara has the fountain pen, Rafiq has the folding umbrella, and the brass key is left for Mira. The cycle on the live board is Blank → Possible → Ruled out → Matched → Blank.
